After angioplasty, many patients ask me: “Doctor, now what precautions should I take?”

The angioplasty procedure is done. Now the very important after-care starts.

Let’s keep this simple and practical.

1. Watch the Procedure Site

Angioplasty is done through wrist or groin.

Some things are normal:

• mild pain

• slight swelling

• mild dark discoloration

But don’t ignore:

• increasing pain

• increasing swelling

• pus

• fresh bleeding

If you see this, contact your doctor immediately.

2. Watch for New Symptoms

This is critical. If you feel:

• chest pain

• heaviness in chest

• sudden breathlessness

Do not wait. Inform your cardiologist immediately.

3. Keep Emergency Medicine Ready

Many patients are advised - Tab Sorbitrate 5mg

• keep it with you always

• place under tongue during chest pain

Important: Only use if your doctor has advised it.

4. Do Not Miss Medicines

This is the most common mistake.

After angioplasty:

• number of medicines increases

• patients forget or skip doses

This is dangerous.

Missing medicines can cause:

• stent blockage

• heart attack

Take medicines exactly as prescribed.

5. Control Other Diseases

If you have:

• diabetes

• high BP

• high cholesterol

• thyroid or kidney disease

Keep them under strict control.

Otherwise:

• new blockages can form

• stent can block again

6. Follow a Heart-Healthy Diet

Keep it simple.

• more fruits and vegetables

• more salads

• avoid fried food

Also follow any specific advice given like :

• low salt

• low sugar

• fluid restriction

7. Stop Smoking and Reduce Stress

Two major enemies:

• smoking or tobacco

• stress

Both increase chances of:

• heart attack

• stent blockage

Best is to eliminate both.

8. Regular Follow-Up is Important

Regulalrly meet your cardiologist, even if you feel fine.

Why? Because some problems:

• don’t give early symptoms

• are detected only on check-up

So follow your cardiologist’s follow up schedule.

9. Activity and Rest

You do not need long bed rest. In most patients:

• discharge in 2–3 days

• normal daily activity can start soon

Avoid:

• heavy exertion and

• intense physical activity initially

Most people return to routine work within 1–2 weeks.

10. Be Prepared for Emergencies

Save important numbers:

• hospitals

• ambulance service

If chest pain happens:

• no time should be wasted searching contacts

Quick action saves life.

11. Travel Carefully

If you are travelling:

• carry all medicines

• carry emergency tablet (sorbitrate)

• identify nearest hospital

Do not assume medicines will be available everywhere.

Bonus Tip: Learn CPR
