Many patients ask me after their angiography: “Doctor, what should I take care of now?”

Angiography is a simple test, but proper care after it is important. Let’s go step by step.

Care after angiography
Care after angiography

1. Movement of the Joint

This depends on where angiography was done.

If done from wrist:

• avoid wrist movement for 24 hours • you can move the rest of your hand normally

If done from groin:

• avoid bending hip for 24 hours • avoid leg movement for first 5–6 hours • after that, walking is allowed

2. Take Care of the Puncture Site

After angiography:

• a tight bandage is applied • later replaced with normal dressing

At home:

• remove bandage after 24 hours • wash with soap and water • dry the area immediately

Wound usually heals in 2–3 days.

3. Watch for Warning Signs at the Site

Some things are normal:

• mild pain • slight swelling • mild discoloration

But contact your doctor if you notice:

• increasing pain • increasing swelling • pus discharge • fresh bleeding

4. Drink Enough Water

During angiography, a dye (contrast) is used.

This needs to be flushed out through urine.

So:

• drink 3–4 liters of water in 24 hours • continue good hydration after the test

Important:

Ask your doctor if you have fluid restriction (heart failure, kidney issues).

5. Food After Angiography

• you are usually kept fasting before the test • after shifting to ward, you can eat

No need for prolonged fasting after the procedure.

6. Watch for New Symptoms

Be alert for:

• chest pain • breathlessness • skin rash or allergy

If any of these occur, inform your doctor immediately.

7. Rest – But Not Too Much

Most patients need:

• around 24 hours of rest

After that:

• you can resume normal routine gradually

No need for prolonged bed rest in most cases.

8. Follow Any Specific Restrictions

Depending on your report, your doctor may advise:

• salt restriction • fluid restriction • activity restriction

Follow these strictly.

9. Take Medicines Properly

After angiography:

• medicines may be changed • some new medicines may be added

Understand clearly:

• what to take • when to take

If advised, keep emergency medicine like with you.

10. Restart Blood Thinners Carefully

Some strong blood thinners like:

• warfarin • acitrom

are often stopped before angiography.

After the procedure:

• ask your doctor when to restart

Do not restart on your own.

Key Takeaways

• avoid joint movement for 24 hours

• keep puncture site clean and dry

• drink adequate water (if not cinta-indicated)

• watch for warning signs

• take medicines exactly as advised
